Our company Profile

Love Uganda Foundation is a Community Based Non-Government Organization operating in Uganda. LUF is an indigeneous Christian Based Organization, started in 2008 as a charity foundation with 10 helpless children from remote families. Later the charity foundation was legalized and transformed into a national center in 2012 with children from all over the country. Some of the Members who joined in to set up the center were friends. Today we are proud to be associated with such a big family.

The major objective of the foundation is to empower the children through provision of quality education and mentor-ship to save the next generation. These services are to be provided to children within and around the community.  It was during this period that the foundation carried out some new activities to support and achieve this objective. Community mobilization and sensitization, home visiting and care, monitoring families with such children and support supervision, resource mobilization and planning were developed among other programs.

In the same year in an annual general meeting, members resolved that the orphanage should focus on addressing the education development issues more directly from primary to tertiary level. In 2012, LUF recognized the need to broaden the scope of the interventions to cover other social economic poverty issues and health in a holistic and sustainable manner. LUF has already made a long-term commitment that considers the root causes of insufficient education. This area of care will be the pilot project area as it helps many orphans, street and needy children with low levels of community awareness on education.

CHILD ADVOCACY AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

 

This activity area includes all interventions relating to empowerment of children in especially difficult circumstances. The series also involve all activities aimed at realizing commitment and action from community towards the empowerment of children / young people. The following will be done;

  • Counseling, child recovery and re-unification
  • Advocacy for children through media coverage
  • Child care and protection, organizing children in groups
  • Skills development
  • Maternal and child health care
  • Parental attitudes and behavior
  • Parental skills and guidance, Parental literacy, Cultural identity
  • Equipment for child activities & Monitoring and evaluation.

  • Gender:

Love Uganda Foundation enrolls almost equal numbers of female (52%) and male (48%)

  • Ethnicity:

Our children reflect a rich tribal diversity with children from all over Uganda though the majority come from nearby districts like Mukono, Kayunga, Kampala, Wakiso and Mpigi. But the plan will consider recruiting OVC from all over the country side.

  • Age:

Love Uganda Foundation looks after children between the ages of 3yrs-15 yrs. These are normally children abandoned by parents; orphans among others. Children are currently accommodated in a bungalow house which was built by funds from donor friends and personal saving. The house has six rooms each with the capacity of 8 children. There is also a room for the caretakers as well as the washrooms. However by Law children center are supposed to accommodate 2 children per room but because of the many children who come to us, we have been left with no option but to utilize the little space that we have currently to accommodate them.

This strategic plan will therefore consider the option of building more houses so that our children are given the best care and services. Besides this bungalow house has been scheduled for renovation so as widen it and create more space for accommodation. Click here, to find more of the details.

 2. GOVERNANCE OF LOVE UGANDA FOUNDATION.

LUF is still a small children foundation though it has to set up all the organs expected of a modern children’s center. The role of each organ will be defined in the governance policy document but the following are the governance organs at Love Uganda Foundation.

  • The Founders Board.

The fountain of governance is vested in the foundation board of Directors that must be comprised of experienced, cultured and imminent personalities committed to steer Love Uganda Foundation to excellence amid the challenges of the 21st century. The founder’s body is the body of proprietors and board of directors. The board members who also serve as trustees of Love Uganda Foundation. Members to be nominated at the annual general meeting.

  • The Governing Council

The governing council as the top administrative organ is responsible for overseeing management performance and advise the founder’s board. Council is solely responsible for academic, administrative and supervision of the Foundation to be elected at the annual general meeting.

Management board is responsible for the day to day operations of the centre and its membership includes the following.

  • Staffing

Currently, LUF has 3 full time employees and ten volunteers. Our full time staff comprises of one Center administrator, two care takers. Volunteers are normally University Students who aim at giving back to society. They come from Makerere University, Multitech Business School and Church members.

In this strategic plan, we shall give priority to human resource enhancement i.e. increasing our staff will give an efficient and effective system of managing the center.

For the next five years LUF plans to strengthen its partnership and affiliations with local based, international children organisations and government agencies such as Ministries in line with children affairs. ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Currently the Foundation is paying fees for 30 students under our External Program in the community schools where our social work team takes off time and identifies children/orphans from poorest families in a community that have failed to access education due to poverty. Currently, this external program is going on in 3 communities; Ruhijja- Kabale, Paichor-Gulu, Tegot-Gulu under the campaign “Keep An Orphan In School” and we hope to increase the number of children by 20% in the Five years of this strategic Plan 2016-2020.
  • We have been able to establish various community outreach programs which tackle various issues in life among the Widows, Elderly, Disabled, Girl-child and have so much benefited the communities. Our widows’ projects in Gulu, Kateete and Kalagi have availed an opportunity to  for widows and women to gain skills and earn a living out of them.

 

  • Not only do we train them skills but also teach them about many life aspects which include; Godly principles about life, Health and Sanitation, HIV/AIDS Sensitization, among others. This has greatly impacted the women league alongside other categories of people within our External Program. We as well donate basic life materials to them as this is one step to restore hope and empower these great mothers.

 

  • Infrastructure Development: Access to space is a basic requirement of a children center. It’s because of this that LUF gave top priority to acquire space in a good location. LUF operates in kalagi town council where we were able to build a house together with our donor friends which currently accommodates the children.

 

Direct Beneficiaries

  1. 50 young farmers each year in Luweero, Mpigi and Wakiso district, 5 women/youth groups, 50 community leaders & opinion leaders.
  2. 1000 family household at village level, local community at large

CHALLENGES FACED BY ORPHANS IN UGANDA.

Over the past few years, the number of orphans and vulnerable children living in Uganda has been escalating at an alarming rate. In 2004, the number of orphans was estimated to be 1.8 million and by 2009 that number had grown to nearly 2.6 million. Over one million of those children have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS-related complications and the following are their problems.

  1. Extreme Poverty: Many of these children are deprived of their basic needs due to high levels of poverty. Nearly half of the population lives below poverty line, out of which 19% are children. Uganda’s rural areas in particular struggle with a very high poverty rate.

 

  1. Caretaking: After their parents die or become disabled by illness, orphans and vulnerable children as young as five years old become both mother and father to their younger siblings. Those whose parents suffer from HIV/AIDS face an additional burden of care as complications develop and worsen over time. Children are forced to drop out of school as they try and provide basic necessities for their siblings.

 

  1. Unfair wages: Orphans ought to find work wherever they can due to their lack of education and resources: laboring in fields, tending cattle, carrying water, or other back-breaking tasks. When they are able to find work, orphans are often paid unfair wages because they have no alternative but to accept whatever is given. When there is no work, they must beg for or steal food to ward off starvation.  Survival becomes a daily struggle.

 

  1. Exploitation: Living in extreme poverty without the support of their parents, orphans are vulnerable to additional kinds of exploitation. Neighbors and occasionally relatives can take advantage of them because they know that there is no longer an adult to enforce the children’s property rights. Orphans are also vulnerable to physical abuse. These children are beaten, and sometimes mutilated, after they are driven by hunger to steal small amounts of food to eat. Girls are subject to sexual exploitation when they face the hard choice of selling their bodies for food or watching their families go hungry.

 

  1. Isolation: Many of these children live in communities where there are widespread misconceptions about the causes of HIV/AIDS. After their parents die from HIV/AIDS-related complications, they are shunned by neighbors and community members for fear of catching the disease. Orphans find themselves isolated within their communities, surrounded by those who are unwilling or unable to reach out to them.
